Presentation of Dictionaries

Liz Davies is seen here with Year 6 at Peter Lea School. As part of Cardiff West Rotary Club’s Literacy programme Liz presented each of them with a dictionary, which they will be able to use in the years ahead.

It was a special day because the School works with our Club to raise funds for the purchase of Lifestraws and gave Liz £100 which they had raised this year. They hope to be able to give more after their fundraising efforts at the School fete.

District Conference at Torquay

We drove through through torrential rain to arrive in sunny Torquay.

DG david Curtis opened the proceedings by declaring the House of Friendship open.  There were lots of stalls all crying out to be supported. How can you possible choose?

We were welcomed to Torquay by musicians and a choir from Torquay Academy and the Chairman of Torbay Council, Councillor Julien Parrott.

Past RI Director Paul Knyff brought a message from RI President Ron Burton.

There were presentations by:

Angela Gorman –  “Life for African Mothers”. Her work was summed up when she asked “Why is it acceptable for women in Africa to die during childbirth, if it is not acceptable in Europe”.

David John,  “Prostate Cymru,” who graphically explained Prostate cancer and encouraged all the men to get a check-up.

Luke Simon, who set up the charity “School in a Bag” in memory of his brother who died in the Tsunami in Thailand.
Unfortunately Joseph Lempira, a Massai warrior was unable to get a visa so a substitute speaker spoke about  work in Kenya with the Maasai – “Light of Maasi”.
Mike Parry also helped out. His robe was rather long on him as no stilts were available!
Mark Ward described how the Trussell Trust came about and how it was helping to set up Food Banks across the country. When the figures for the growth in numbers was shown we were shocked by the exponential growth in the number of people helped. The figure for last year was in the order of 750000. That number had been helped in the first six months of this year!!
Danielle Treharne explained how Micro Finance was helping poor “entrepreneurs” to get a start. The premise being that aid comes and goes but helping someone to start earning money develops people and their communities.
There was fun at the conference. An Old Thyme Music Hall and a dinner dance
The Conference was brought to a close with Dr Geoff Mackey, a Rotarian and motivational speaker. a big man in all meanings of the word. He used humour to get his Rotary message across to his audience.
He did stray from the theme on occasions. Illustrating the techniques for handling male and female Rotarians.

Club Visit to Siegen Schloss Rotary Club

A few photos illustrating the trips we were taken on and the superb hospitality we received.

– a visit to a nature reserve where european bison are being protected and allowed to breed in the wild.

– followed by a trip to a castle, still lived in, and then afternoon tea before a superb evening meal.

– Sunday farewell luncheon

A memorable visit. We stayed with Rotarians in their homes, and besides the official events we were taken sightseeing in the region.

A great visit. We look forward to our friends next visit to Cardiff.
